Welcome and thank you for your interest in these exciting leadership roles, probably the biggest and best opportunities for ambitious regeneration and neighbourhoods’ professionals in the country.
You will be joining us at an extremely exciting time, with significant regeneration and development taking place across our amazing county. We are proud partners in the new North-East Combined Authority, who are a key partner in helping us to realise our ambitions. The roles represent a brilliant opportunity to work within a nationally recognised, high-performing council, in a large and diverse county.
We’re the largest council in the North-East region and are responsible for the region’s largest economy. We are looking for an innovative, forward-thinking and inspirational leaders to help to continue to drive our exciting and ambitious agenda forward.
Both roles will report to me, as the Chief Executive, and will be key members of the corporate leadership team of the council. As part of a truly corporate senior team, you will lead an exciting, innovative and modern service across the following areas:
Corporate Director of Regeneration, Economy and Growth:
- Inclusive Growth and Partnerships;
- Housing and Planning;
- Culture, Sport and Tourism.
Corporate Director Neighbourhoods and Climate Change:
- Climate change strategy
- Environment services
- Community Protection services
- Highways services
- Transport and Contract services
County Durham has breadth, scale and a proven track record of delivery, and the council has high aspirations for our residents, businesses and communities. As the largest economy in the region, we’re committed to playing a central role nationally. Our commitment to reducing inequalities will be even more important as we continue the recovery from COVID-19, and our commitment to our climate change strategy will be crucial as we adapt and thrive in the future.
The county has a great opportunity to deliver growth alongside the need for an inclusive approach to our economy, development and outstanding service provision whilst delivering on our climate change commitments. Our key focus is to work extensively with a broad range of partners to seize these opportunities and address inequality

Both roles will work as part of a high performing and integrated corporate leadership team to deliver a cohesive, strategic and performance led approach. Collaborating with our wider council services and teams, you will engage with elected Members, and wider stakeholder to shape the future vision and direction of the council. Relationships, track record and experience are essential, and for both roles candidates will need to have the skills and personal qualities to thrive in a fast paced, commercial and diverse environment.
