Welcome

Head of Environment

Welcome and thank you for your interest in this exciting, high-profile role, which represents an exceptional opportunity to work within a nationally recognised, high-performing council, in a large and diverse county.

We are the largest council in the North-East region and one of the largest upper tier local authorities nationally. With scale and connectivity, we are a centre for business, innovation and culture with world renowned landscapes and heritage. We have an ambitious management team, and our members look to the future with optimism for our county.

We are looking for an innovative and forward-thinking leader to help drive our exciting agenda forward. The role will report directly to me and work closely with the Corporate Management Team, our elected Members, staff across the Council and our partners.

County Durham has breadth, scale and a proven track record of delivery - and the council’s future aspirations for our residents and communities are high. You will lead the provision of a diverse range of integrated and customer focused frontline services that meet the operational needs of today while helping to create a cleaner, greener, carbon neutral county for future generations.

A proven track record in building and developing effective working relationships and the skills and personal qualities to thrive in a fast paced, diverse and political environment are essential. You’ll have strategic experience of leading the delivery of Waste and Environmental Services and will bring a strong understanding of the national policy and legislative context. You’ll have passion and ideas to help the Council achieve its ambitious carbon reduction, waste minimisation and environmental targets.

Working together we will ensure that in County Durham we achieve our exciting vision for 2035 and build a better future for all.

I look forward to receiving your application to step into this unique and exciting role.
